Malton 10k: bigger and better than ever!

Sunday 15th September 2024

With just over a month left until Britain’s tastiest 10k, the team from Visit Malton, which is organising the event, is promising that the Malton 10K will be bigger and better than ever before – and reminding non-runners to come and join the fun!

This year’s Malton 10k – previously known as the Marathon Du Malton – takes place the day after Malton’s monthly food market, with many of the stall-holders staying an extra day to feed the fans.  This means that runners (and walkers) taking on the 10k course will not be the only ones to have delicious locally-prepared food and drink to sample, as the Market Square will be packed with some of Yorkshire’s best food producers, offering everything from cakes and pastries, to cheese and chutneys.

“Two days with two big events means that this weekend is set to be one of the best to be in Malton – there will be a real festival spirit descending on the town, and we want as many people as possible to come and be a part of the festivities,” comments Head of Visit Malton, Mark Brayshaw.

With just over a month to go, the team has already had more entries into all three categories of the Malton 10k – runners only, Classique and L’Escargot – than last year.  The latter two categories take part in the Gourmet Wineathlon, sipping and nibbling their way around the 10k course as they either run or take a leisurely stroll around the beautiful North Yorkshire countryside.  Food and drink stands along the route ensure they are fed and watered during the fun event.
Market Place, in front of St Michael’s Church, is the start and end point for all the races, and will play host to live music and entertainment, with a party atmosphere alongside the additional Sunday Market stalls.  Participants are encouraged to bring family and friends along to cheer them off and back home, as there will be plenty to keep them busy (and well-fed!) whilst their loved ones complete the course.

The Malton 10k was inspired by the Marathon du Medoc in France, in which participants run around a vineyard, sampling its wares along the way.  “With so many local providers of both food and drink around Malton – and our route involving some roads rather than just a rural vineyard - we were keen that this isn’t just about the wine, but rather samples of all kinds for our participants, from beef hors d’oevres to a cheeky swig of gin, as they make their way around.  All of Malton’s hostelries will, of course, be ready to welcome them for post 10k celebratory drinks when they return!” adds Mark.

Notes to editors:

There are three versions of the Malton 10k with staggered starts for each.  The first is a real race along the course, where the only thing competitors are chasing is the finish line!  Popular with amateur and professional runners, the route starts and ends in the Market Place, taking runners across the footbridge over the A64 and into stunning countryside.  Cross-country across Richard Fahey’s Gallops (the training ground for many champion racehorses), and through woodland before returning to the town centre – with the fastest completing the course in just over 30 minutes.  This race is known as the Malton 10k: Le Sans Arret (without a stop).

The second event is the main event: Le Classique!  Style and sustenance over speed, the entry price includes gourmet pitstops along the way, with a drink here and a snack there.  Respite liquid refreshment comes courtesy of Malton Brewery, McMillans of Malton (specialists in gin and whisky) and Ryedale Vineyards, whilst calorific snacks – essential to keep energy levels high – include roast beef and Yorkshire pudding canapés from The Talbot and macarons from award-winning pastry chef, Florian Poirot.  Fancy dress is very welcome for this race, creating a fun-run party atmosphere!

The final event is a far more leisurely affair.  L’escargot (French for ‘snail’) offers participants an unpressured walk around the course – perfect for grandparents, children and dogs, or simply those who don’t mind a pleasant stroll between the food and drink stations!
