Malton Museum: Walking Tour - River, Road, Railway
Malton Museum Walking Tour: River, Road, Railway
Date: Saturday 19th April 2025
Time: 11am-12.30pm
Where: Meet at the Malton Museum, 36 Yorkersgate, Malton, YO17 7AB.
Malton Museum offers an interesting variety of public guided walking tours around the town’s historic centre.
This tour takes a route along a stretch of riverbank via Navigation Wharf, now a forgotten backwater, telling the story of Malton’s 18th and 19th century transport and trade, and life before the motor car. This area of town was once an extremely important area bustling with life, and the station was once a noisy place with an imposing railway goods handling building, an outsized cattle dock, and extensive coal sidings that served a wide area. Come and learn about how and where it all happened! (We recommend wearing sensible footwear and bringing a raincoat).
The tour takes about 90 minutes. We use audio headsets to ensure everyone can hear the guides when the town is busy. The maximum size of a group is 20.
Cost £10.00 per person, includes an information pack.
Visit www.maltonmuseum.co.uk for more information.

'Straighten Out' The Ultimate Tribute to The Stranglers
'Straighten Out' The Ultimate Tribute to The Stranglers
Date: Friday 19th April 2025
Time: 8pm
Location: The Milton Rooms, Market Place, Malton, YO17 7LX
Tickets: £20 pp booked here: Straighten Out - The Ultimate Tribute to The Stranglers - The Milton Rooms
Straighten Out are the world’s premier Stranglers tribute band. They have an extensive set-list that spans two solid hours as they recreate the ”early years” sound of The Stranglers, complete with a Hammond organ and Minimoog synth, the same models used by Mr. Greenfield himself, back in the day.
The growling bass sound and the quirky guitar riffs are all there to be heard as is the dual vocal ”attack” from the two frontmen a la Burnel/Cornwell as they rip through the Stranglers’ classics ‘Peaches’, ‘Hanging Around’, ‘No More Heroes’, ‘5 Minutes’, ‘The Raven’, ‘Walk on By’, ‘Straighten Out’, ‘Down In The Sewer’ and many more.
Straighten Out will take you on a nostalgia trip that transports you back to those raw, powerful, exhilarating times when The Stranglers emerged to produce some of the finest music ever written.
Bassist Shaggy and keyboard player Mick (‘The Doc’) were together in previous Stranglers tribute band Four More Heroes and it was only natural that these two continued on after their demise to form Straighten Out given their love of Stranglers music and the desire to keep playing live. They set the platform with the growling bass and swirling keyboard sound so essential to reproducing the authentic Stranglers sound. Joining them are Jet ‘Beets’ on drums and Phil on guitar – providing the ‘Hugh’ element – to complete the fearsome foursome. Straighten Out are a must-see tribute band.

Ben Reel - UK Tour 2025
Ben Reel - UK Tour 2025
Date: Friday 9th May 2025
Time: 8pm
Location: The Milton Rooms, Market Place, Malton, YO17 7LX
Tickets: £15 per person
Event Overview
Ben Reel released his 11th studio album ‘Come a Long Way’ in June 2023. The album charted at No.9 in the Euro Americana chart and No.28 in the IBBA world blues chart.
Since his debut album `This Is the Movie’ back in 1999, Ben has reinvented himself from album to album, influenced by different styles of music over the years. As one critic said: “He’s not afraid to throw in some in folk, soul, reggae vibes, which in turn call to mind John Hiatt at his best.”. Another describes him as “somewhere in the middle ground between rock and jazz or a sound that is sometimes reminiscent of Dylan and The Band”.
He has also been described as the Irish Springsteen and comparisons have been made about his voice sounding like the ghost of Roy Orbison, but Ben Reel is very much his own man.
In a solo career which spans 25 years, Ben has received worldwide critical acclaim with numerous high profile TV/radio appearances like BBC, RTE and Dutch NPO Radio, supporting the likes of Jools Holland and The Cranberries. He has collaborated musically with such names as Hal Ketchum and The Blockheads. He has co-written and performed live with some of Nashville’s finest such as David Olney and Nanci Griffiths.
‘The Nashville Calling` was the title of his ninth studio album which was released in March 2020, produced by Will Kimbrough and Tommy Womack and featuring Garry W Tallent on bass from the legendary E Street Band. Recorded in Nashville, this was a dream come through for Ben. The album went to No.1 in the Euro Americana charts, voted by respected DJs and critics all over Europe.

Malton Museum: Walking Tour - Romans in Malton
Malton Museum Walking Tour: Romans in Malton
Date: Saturday 7th June 2025
Time: 11am - 12.30pm
Meet at Roman Fort, Orchard Fields, just off Old Malton Road
Archaeological work on Malton’s Roman Fort suggests that it was one of very few in the country that was probably operated in varying strength throughout most of the Roman occupation. Roman soldiers were efficient builders and military forts were regularly altered, abandoned and re-instated as necessity arose. Partly built over later by the Normans and cut through even later by a railway track, what is left of the fort site is an unevenly shaped grass field with banks and ditches, but with many hidden stories to discover. Our tour explains the layout of the fort, and the people who lived there for a time. Come and learn about the life of a typical Roman soldier.
The tour takes about 90 minutes. We use audio headsets to ensure everyone can hear the guides when the town is busy. The maximum size of a group is 20.
Cost £10.00 per person, includes an information pack.
Please note that the fort is an uneven area of roughly mown grass which can also be damp in wet weather, so please wear suitable footwear.

Kemps presents: Charlie Connelly’s ‘Attention All Shipping’
Kemps presents Charlie Connelly’s ‘Attention All Shipping’
Date: Wednesday 16th July 2025
Time: 7.30pm
Location: The Milton Rooms, Market Place, Malton, YO17 7LX
Tickets: £18 per person
Event Overview
As the shipping forecast embarks on its second century, bestselling author and award-winning broadcaster Charlie Connelly’s hilarious and informative show brings the quirky broadcast vividly to life, celebrating what he regards as the greatest invention of the modern age.
How did a weather forecast for ships capture the hearts of a nation, from salty old sea dog to insomniac landlubber? How is it possible for ‘rain later’ to be ‘good’? And where the hell is North Utsire?
Delving into the history of the forecast and the extraordinary people who made it, Charlie explains what those curious phrases really mean, celebrates its wide cultural impact, shares rip-roaring adventures from his own extraordinary journey through the 31 sea areas – the times he was accused by the media of trying to annex Rockall from the British government and sang sea shanties with Tom Hardy in a Manx hotel bar while Scary Spice pulled the pints – and presents his case for the shipping forecast being our finest achievement.
Inspired by Charlie’s bestselling book, which has sold more than a quarter-of-a-million copies worldwide, this pacy, moving and hilarious show takes you all the way from Viking to South East Iceland to ensure the shipping forecast will never sound the same again.
“Charlie Connelly is one of the funniest people I have ever had the pleasure of sitting in a studio with…He has a natural wit that doesn’t get crushed by an over-zealous ego with a lovely personality attached to it.” Fi Glover, broadcaster
“Charlie is always warm, funny and engaging…I actually sent him a fan letter – and I’ve never done that to anyone in my life before.” Bernard Sumner, New Order
“I can thoroughly recommend an evening spent in the company of the very funny and very lovely Charlie Connelly, whose knowledge of what I call ‘the ships’ is excellent. Sou’westers optional.” Corrie Corfield, BBC Radio 4

Malton Museum Roman Festival 2025
Malton Roman Festival 2025
THE EMPIRE IS BACK - MALTON MUSEUM ROMAN FESTIVAL
Its July the 20th 2025 and early in the morning nothing stirs except the birds in the trees. The sun is up and it’s a lovely day and then from far away the sounds of marching men and horses as once again the Malton Museum Roman Festival arrives to reclaim the fort and vicus of Delgovicia (now known as Orchard Field) for the Emporer.
All citizens of Malton, Norton and the surrounding area are invited to attend from 10 o’clock in the morning to 4 o’clock in the afternoon to enjoy demonstrations of marching, fighting and horsemanship as well as displays of archaeology and Roman life. And there’s plenty for the younger citizens to do as well but be aware! – they might be recruited into the Kids Roman Army and put through their marching skills by one of the legionaries. We are in the process of lining up authors and other speakers.
Food and drink will be plentiful on site with savoury and sweet items from local traders.
We are now taking applications from groups, Roman historical societies, traders and traditional craft workers who would like to attend.
Notes for editors
The settlement of Delogovicia was a calvary base and established around AD71.
Formerly thought to be Derventio, recent research has suggested that Derventio was more likely to have been Stamford Bridge and Delogvicia is now the more widely accepted name for the Orchard Field site.
Malton Museum reopens for the season on 3rd April and has many items from the fort and local villas such as Langton and Hovingham on display.

Lynne Hanson - Music Concert
Date: Sunday 30th March 2025
Time: 7.30pm
Location: The Milton Rooms, Malton, YO17 7LX
Tickets: £20pp
Too tough for folk and too blues-influenced for country, Lynne Hanson’s brand of porch music with a little red dirt can turn from a sunshine, blue sky ballad to a full on thunderstorm of gritty Americana swamp from one song to the next. Her hard living music has earned her the nickname “Canada’s Queen of Americana”. And while her deep, bluesy croon has drawn comparisons with Lucinda Williams and Gillian Welch, it’s the poetry of her lyrics that really sets her apart.
Hanson is known for her high energy, roots guitar driven live performances, whether playing solo or with her band the Good Intentions. She has an uncanny way of connecting with her audience with an authenticity that is as entertaining as it is disarming.nce chooses the songs from her Song Menu (Mozart to musicals, to Elvis). It’s like nothing you’ve seen before. Taking the ‘posh’ out of opera.

James ‘Jay’ Lewis
Date: Friday 21st March 2025
Time: 8pm
Location: The Milton Rooms, Market Place, Malton, YO17 7LX
Tickets: £15 per person
Event Overview
A self-taught multi-instrumentalist, James Jay Lewis has graced some of the biggest stages across the globe performing in The La’s, playing bass for the band Cast and currently as the lead guitarist in The Zutons.
At eight, James picked up his first guitar and embarked on a lifelong journey in music, honing his craft through countless hours of listening to the likes of Hendrix, Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Nick Drake and many more. He formed the band Cractilla and they toured up and down the UK in the early 2000s. He has been a professional musician ever since.
James’s two solo albums,, both written and produced by himself, Back to the Fountain and Waiting for the World, are a testament to his diverse musical talent. Back to the Fountain is an acoustic odyssey where every note and sound tells the story of a beautiful masterpiece.
His newly released album, Waiting for the World, on the other hand is a unique lo-fi experience. It has a captivating charm as James plays all the instruments on the record. A rough and ready garage blues masterpiece. Fans agree, describing it as innovative, diverse and a truly pleasing aural experience, an album well worth owning.
As James continues to forge a journey in music, he has had the privilege of working with Nile Rodgers at Abbey Road Studios, is also involved in the new Zutons album due for release and is venturing into the domain of recording, producing and composing for television and film.
