Back by popular demand, this talk by author Harry Pearson casts light on The Battle of Byland in 1322, a fascinating but little-known and neglected episode of our island history.
This year marks the 700th anniversary of the Battle of Byland which was fought on the 14th October 1322, at the site of Sutton Bank in the North York Moors. Although this significant event took place in the heart of Yorkshire, it has been largely forgotten and much-neglected.
The book tells the story of how King Robert ‘the Bruce’ led a brilliant campaign in the aftermath of Edward II’s failed invasion of Scotland in 1322, leading to the dramatic Battle of Byland on 14th October, and the near-capture of the English king. On only two occasions in the history of medieval Anglo-Scottish warfare were the kings of both countries present on the battlefield, this being one of them, hence the title ‘Clash of Crowns’.
